The Cubans were members of the Watergate break-in team that all had ties to working with Hunt during his time at the CIA. Frank Sturgis was a police officer, private investigator, Marine and anti-communist recruited by Howard Hunt to assist with the Watergate break-in. Playing Sturgis in White House Plumbers is Kim Coates, best known for his roles in titles like Bad Blood, Sons of Anarchy, Goon and Godless. McCord was another former CIA operative who was brought on in the official capacity to be the head of security for Nixon's Committee for the Re-Election of the President, but would find himself in the thick of the Watergate scandal. Gleeson is coming off some of the best reviews of his career for the FX series The Patient.

Among his other roles are the latest Star Wars trilogy, American Made, Brooklyn, Ex Machina and About Time. The actress is of course best known for her role as Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, Headey has also appeared in 300, Fighting With My Family, Gunpowder Milkshake and most recently lent her voice to the animated movie DC League of Super-Pets. Dorothy Hunt is the wife of Howard Hunt, but she is no typical housewife.

He goes home to wife Dorothy (Lena Headey), who has a more decorated espionage past of her own, and an assortment of screwed up kids. An FBI wash-out, Liddy has a reputation for eccentricity and an unnervingly chipper, well-behaved family fronted by wife Fran (Judy Greer). The two men are brought together by Bud Krogh (Rich Sommer) and tasked with investigating the leak of the Pentagon Papers.

Fran Liddy is the ever supporting wife of Gordon Liddy, in the show played by Judy Greer. Greer is a fan-favorite actress, known for roles in Archer, 13 Going on 30, Arrested Development and the new Halloween movies. More recently she starred in TV shows Reboot, The First Lady and The Thing About Pam. Woody Harrelson, Justin Theroux, Lena Headey, Judy Greer, Domhnall Gleeson and more headline this series premiering on HBO on May 1, but let's get to know who they are playing as well as more of the cast bringing these historical figures to life. Toby Huss is a longtime character actor who is having a moment right now, as in addition to White House Plumbers he stars in the Paramount Plus original series Fatal Attraction. Some other Huss roles include Dickinson, Copshop and Halt and Catch Fire. Many of the infamous names behind the Watergate scandal are being portrayed by famous ones as part of the White House Plumbers cast. The new HBO limited series is based on the hard to believe true events that ultimately led to Richard Nixon's resignation, specifically the blundering team of spies and burglars known as the Plumbers. As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, Daniels opened up a development room to explore ideas for a follow-up series to the Emmy-winning The Office. Daniels has indicated that a new Office iteration could follow a crew doing a documentary about a different subject.

E. Howard Hunt was a former CIA agent who was one of the key players in the Watergate scandal. In the series, he is an ardent defender of President Nixon, believing that leaks like the Pentagon Papers are helping to destroy the nation that he worked to defend. However, his spycraft game is exactly as strong as he thinks it is.

Mostly, though, the actors in the overqualified supporting cast come in, attempt to yell or flail or sputter exaggeratedly to keep up with the leads and then depart without justifying their performance. By the end of an hour, I was exhausted by the hijinks. By the end of two hours, having sat through extended reenactments of each failed Watergate break-in, I was looking for anything resembling a still center to this madcap universe. By the end of three hours, I’d identified Headey’s clear-eyed and capable Dorothy as the one character here worth rooting for — like a more deadly version of Martha Mitchell, the focus of Starz’s recent attempt to paint Watergate as a scandal fueled by buffoons. And by the end of the fourth episode I was actively angry with the glibly cheap laughs that accompanied Dorothy and her real-life fate.
The five-episode limited series premieres on HBO and HBO Max on May 1. Parts of White House Plumbers are laugh-out-loud outrageous – but other parts do make you feel for some of these people, and, of course, compare that scandal to more contemporary ones. All the President's Men is one of my favorite movies of all time — and White House Plumbers is good enough to be shown as a very long, all-Watergate double feature.
Howard Hunt, played by Woody Harrelson, and G. They were called the Plumbers because, well, plumbers locate and stop leaks. The actors Justin Theroux (left) and Woody Harrelson play G. Howard Hunt in the new HBO miniseries White House Plumbers.
The Game of Thrones actress plays Dorothy Hunt, first wife of E. She was killed in December 1972, when United Airlines Flight 553 crashed en route from Washington to Omaha. Though it was ruled an accident, her presence on the flight (and the fact that she had $10,000 in cash on her) led to various Watergate-related conspiracy theories, including that the crash was planned by the CIA. Thanks to the classic that is All the President's Men, we're more than familiar with the sensational true story of how Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered Watergate. Lesser known perhaps is the other duo at the heart of this scandal, a pair of operatives named E. Gordon Liddy, who also had a hand in toppling the Nixon presidency—except they had been scheming to do the exact opposite.
There are reports that she was an asset for the CIA in her own right and would have a hand to play in the Watergate scandal. Most viewers will know Theroux from his roles in Mulholland Drive, Zoolander, The Leftovers and The Mosquito Coast. He is also a writer (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2, Rock of Ages) and an Emmy-winning producer for the specials Live in Front of a Studio Audience. Like Hunt, G. Gordon Liddy was a former federal agent, previously working for the FBI before he started working for the Plumbers. Liddy is a bit of an eccentric, with Politico calling him "Watergate's most colorful character," which is not an empty distinction. Viewers of the show will see early on how Justin Theroux brings those eccentricities to life.
