A prominent artist of the Arts and Crafts movement, Alice Cordelia Morse (American, 1863–1961) started her career as a glass painter for the firm of Louis C. Tiffany before returning to The Cooper Union for postgraduate training in art and design. She began designing book covers in the late 1880s and quickly became one of the most sought-after artists in the field. Cooper Hewitt plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the National Design Awards in Spring 2025.
National Design Week Programs
In 1970, the museum moved into its present home, the Carnegie Mansion, which was renovated and reopened to the public in 1976. In addition to exhibits, the museum hosts design competitions, such as the National Design Awards and offers a wide array of educational programs, including a masters degree program with Parsons The New School for Design since 1982. In 1895, Peter Cooper's granddaughters, Eleanor Garnier Hewitt, Sarah Cooper Hewitt, and Amy Hewitt Green, asked the trustees of the Cooper Union for room in which to install a Museum for the Arts of Decoration, modeled after the Musée des Artes Décoratifs of Paris, France.

National Design Award jurors represent a wide range of design fields and are invited to serve annually for their prominence and expertise in the design world and their ability to provide knowledgeable, fair, and critical assessments on each category’s nominees. Tickets are not required to visit the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden, the museum cafe, and SHOP Cooper Hewitt.

Greiman uses a conventional sans serif typeface for the typography, but she creates a three-dimensional effect by printing two superimposed images of the text, one in cyan and the other in magenta. Rick’s works are collected and exhibited worldwide and can be found in the permanent collections of The Denver Art Museum, The Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum, Columbia University’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library, and The Tweed Museum at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He is a founder and partner with Debra Johnson of the graphic design consultancy MATTER, the designer behind the Black Astronaut Research Project, The Pledge for Spaces, and the Introductory Ethic for Designers and Other Thinking Persons. He co-owns a retail revolutionary bookstore and book club for designers, and DJs a live Internet radio show, Design To Kill.
Your Turn, My Turn demonstrates the designer’s obsession with digital imagery and print graphics through its unusual incorporation of 3D surfaces. Two-dimensionally, the poster’s vibrant neon hues and expressive composition evoke the immediacy of popular culture and psychedelic art that originated in California. The title and date of the conference are centered in the composition above a geometric shape with a celestial explosion enclosed. Illustrations of a planet, chair, and random shapes circle around the type, receding from view.
Cohen fulfilled numerous commissions before opening the bookstore and gallery Ex Libris with her second husband, Arthur Cohen. Accomplished weaver Dorothy Wright Liebes (American, 1897–1972) is often credited as a vital part of the California Modernist movement, and was once one of the most well-known designers in the United States. Liebes was a sharp businesswoman who believed mass-produced textiles could reach wider audiences while retaining a handwoven appearance.
National Design Week
Design Visionary nominees must have been practicing professionally for a minimum of 25 years if an individual or established for a minimum of 10 years if a firm, corporation, or organization. Previous winners of a National Design Award in any category are ineligible to win in the Design Visionary category until 10 years after receiving their first National Design Award. Given to an individual or firm for the forward-thinking design of objects, products, and materials. We invite you to join us on Friday, May 3, 2024 for a studio visit to Atlason, a New York City-based design firm and winner of the 2023 National Design Award for Product Design. The Parsons School of Design, in partnership with Cooper Hewitt, offers an accredited Master’s Program in the History of Design and Curatorial Studies located on the museum campus. The program prepares the next generation of design curators, conservators, scholars, educators, and administrators; all of whom receive hands-on experience with masterworks of design and are fully integrated into the museum’s departments.
Guest curator Rebeca Méndez considers how culture, design, technology, and the natural world have converged throughout history. Ilonka Karasz (Hungarian, 1896–1981) studied art at the Royal Academy of Arts and Crafts in Budapest, where she was one of the first women to be admitted. After immigrating to the United States in 1913, she became an active member of the New York design scene. Working in a variety of mediums, Karasz is well known for her wall coverings and illustrations. Trained at the Kansas City Art Institute, April Greiman (American, born 1948) continued her studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland.
Wang and Levy lecture extensively, and they teach courses on time, electronics, hardware, programming, inflatables, and morphology at Pratt Institute, New York University, and the School for Poetic Computation. Their pedagogy extends into their Brooklyn home/studio where they host office hours to lend a hand or offer insight to anyone interested in figuring out how to make something themselves.
